People In North Carolina Don’t Like Duke Either
As a North Carolina State fan it’s always been a pet peeve of mine when people see what state I’m from and automatically assume I’m either a Carolina fan, or a Duke fan. There are other college teams in the state folks. As a child, I HATED UNC. Absolutely hated them! As I grew older, and began to understand the game a little more, I found respect for UNC. Still despise them, but not on the level I once did.
Duke was a little different. Duke was fun and refreshing to watch during the Johnny Dawkins and Tommy Amaker years. They were helping the Wolfpack stand up to hated UNC. However, the older I got….I really began to despise Duke. Then I took a look around…all my friends hated them also. My friends were graduates and fans of various other schools….none of them really hated NC State, Carolina, or Wake Forest…but they all hated Duke. In fact, unless they attended Duke, or for some reason fell into “duke fandom”, pretty much everyone I know….hates Duke basketball. So, if you are from another state and run into someone from North Carolina. Please don’t assume that we like Duke basketball….we probably don’t.
Here’s why:
1.
Coach K. Yeah, the guy is a winner and has coached umpteen ACC & NCAA championship teams, blah blah blah. We don’t care. He’s classless. The thing that really bothers opposing fans is that K acts like he is such the “sportsman”. He’s in all these commercials preaching sportsmanship and values, (and recruiting players, that’s another story) then he comes out on the court and drops more F bombs than Chris Rock in concert. He CONSTANTLY berates officials, to the point where other ACC fans believe K actually has the officials scared, causing them to let calls go that they would normally be called. He whines and complains all game long and then after the game tries to act all honorable. Just google image the guys name and you’ll see how much he is loved. No other coach in America is parodied as much as K.
Coach K in Action (IMO the 2nd call was missed, but this is still classic K….also classic Dukie V acting like the first call on Redick was obvious)
An Anti Duke Video- Hits on a lot of bad K moments, and check out JJ skipping the hand shake line vs. U-Conn at the 2:30 mark.
2. Duke cheats. Back in the day, it was Coach K himself that used to say that Dean Smith intimidated the ref’s. Wow, how the tables have turned. Duke plays a good brand of basketball. They don’t need any help. Duke gets away with more hand checking and flopping on defense than any team in the nation. Is it any wonder why the Blue Devils have more trouble with non-conference refs? There were a couple of games last year where the wrong calls were obviously made, especially the first game against FSU. The media finally had to take notice and oddly enough, the calls evened out?? Go figure.
The FLOP in action Not the traditional “take a charge” flop, but obviously a flop.

3. The Players. Duke players fall into several categories-
First, the arrogant white players that went on to marginal (or no) pro careers
Jay Bilas. Can there be a bigger Duke Homer? WE have to endure this guy nightly

Danny Ferry, when he had hair
Lord save us all from Christian Laettner.

Matt Cristensen. HA HA.

Mike Dunleavy.….coaches son

Nuf’ said
Shavlik Randolph. His mom really said she cut up his steak for him
Josh McRoberts. The torch has officially been passed.
Ok, next category- Slimy, small, nerdy, floor slapping, white point guards. UGGGGH
Bobby Hurley. Gotta give it up for Hurley…he was very good, but still slimy.

Quin Snyder. Seriously, where do they get these guys?

“Wojo” Oh god.

Jason Williams- Ok, he isn’t white, but he fits all the other criteria

Greg Paulus, the new generation of irritating white kids
Finally, last but not least, these guys….I’m not quite sure how to group them other than to say Duke has a unique talent for finding light skinned guys with major attitudes. Divas is what we call them.

Shane Battier, the ultimate flopper.

Jeff Capel (I think Capel was a member of the Duke team that K abandoned because the sucked…or his back hurt)

Trajan Langdon, Great shooter….that was about it
Dahntay Jones This guy was incredibly annoying.

Grant Hill. Super great college player.
4. This guy:Â
Dick Vitale is the most annoying Duke Homer in history. It really hurts me that people on a national level watch him and associate him with North Carolina.
Why would someone want a Dicky V alarm clock?
5. These guys:Â
Honestly, the whole “Cameron Crazies” thing was really cool for a minute. The way the students get hyped is still awesome. But the organized chants have gotten tired….especially when K ridicules other schools for chanting…..and hearing Dukie V rave about them all the time is beyond torture
6. The fact that most Dukies are from here:
How did New Jersey become part of “Tobacco Road”?
7. Duke fans act like football doesn’t exist.
I’ve actually met Duke basketball fans that pull for teams like Texas in football
That’s about all I’ve got….feel free to add. Mac, Jeff, and Eric, I know you’re out there.
This doesn’t help matters much.
I’ll leave this alone…..
Well, maybe not

Duke Haters make me laugh!!!!
Scott, I’m sorry that your Aunt is a Duke Lover. Always have been and always will be. Your comments are amusing though.
Nice win over Georgetown tonight!!
McRoberts is looking goooood Bay bee
Jealousy = Hatred
If I were jealous…wouldn’t it be of Carolina? Also, Laurie, aren’t you originally from another state? Sums up my post nicely.
Seems like we have this debate every year.
Obviously you don’t have to be born in the same state as your favorite team…
I Don’t recall you being born in Dallas
sums up my post nicely too!!! (:
Not really….college vs. pro. Last time I checked NC did not have a pro football team when I was 10 years old. Sorry, I didn’t switch when the Panthers came to town.
agree to disagree
It’s a free Country… pull for whatever team you like
Grow up a Duke Fan.. still a Duke Fan
Grow up a Cowboys Fan… still a Cowboys fan
at least we can agree on our loyalty
That was Laurie on the last post, not Paul
