Weekend Roundup, Local Sports
Charlotte Independence won their 6th straight 4-AA NCHSAA Championship Saturday night, dominating Durham Riverside 49-19. I’m sick of this team winning, I’m not a fan of Charlotte nor any team in the area.
NC State got back on track Saturday , beating Savannah State 74-53. The Pack will host Mt. Saint Mary’s this Saturday at 3:30 pm. Still waiting on the return of Engin Atsur, I’d bet he doesn’t return for Mt. Saint Mary’s, but makes it back for the Alabama match-up later in the week.
Also on Saturday, #25 Georgia Tech lost to Vanderbilt, 73-64. Highly overrated #7 Duke knocked off George Mason, 69-53, and #3 UNC beat High Point 94-69.
In ACC action Sunday, Boston College knocked off #23 Maryland, 73-62.
As for the Hurricanes….the Canes lost Friday night in OT to Vancouver, 4-3….despite scoring 3 goals in the 3rd to tie the game at 3. Tonight they were at Colorado, and lost again, this time 5-2. Cory Stillman returned tonight and recorded an assist. Rod Brind’Amour did not play in either game. The Canes finished up the road trip 0-4, and now return home to face Toronto Friday night.
Finally, last but certainly not least Appalachian State destroyed Youngstown State 49-24 Saturday, to advance to their 2nd consecutive NCAA Division I-AA National Championship game. Let me add that if you haven’t seen Appalachian State QB Armanti Edwards play….you need to check him out. Edwards is a dynamic runner and thrower in the mold of Vince Young and Michael Vick. In fact, Edwards (a freshman) is just the 5th division 1 player to throw for 2000 yards, and rush for 1000 in the same season. Saturday, Edwards threw for 164 yards and a TD, and ran for another 110 yards and 3 TD. Appalachian is set to face Massachusetts in the championship game. The Minutemen beat Montana 19-17 Friday night.
So, if you find yourself in need of a football fix Friday night be sure to check out ESPN 2 at 8 pm. Top-seeded Appalachian (13-1) and No. 3 UMass (13-1) will square off for the national title on Friday evening at 8 p.m. at Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium. It’s a good, exciting brand of football, and hey….they use a playoff to determine the champion….the way it should be.
I would like to thank my Uncle Paul for contributing to this article….Paul is a part time resident of Boone, NC, home of Appalachian State, and has been a supporter of the Mountaineers for some time. I have to admit, were it not for Paul, I probably wouldn’t even know this game existed. Check out GoASU.com for more Appalachian State news.
