NC State @ Clemson (1987)
I found yet another NC State clip today. This is a photo essay from a 10-24-1987 football game between NC State and Clemson. The essay was done by Jeff Gravley and Jay Jennings of WRAL channel 5, here in Raleigh. I remember taping this, but honestly don’t recognize any of the Wolfpack players, other than head coach Dick Sheridan. I was having some trouble figuring out what year this game was from until I found THIS. I noticed on that site that State beat Duke, 47-45 that year and it brought back to my memory that I had recorded the same type photo essay from that game as well….I haven’t found it yet, I would have thought it would be on this same tape, so we’ll see. I believe that was the Steve Spurrier “Air Ball” Blue Devils.
Also, I added a new category especially for all these old tapes I’m finding. From now on, all of these older clips I’m posting will be filed under “Stuff From The Garage”, because that is where the box of tapes was. I decided to add the category because I am finding all kinds of interesting clips from professional sports as well, so the whole NCSU category won’t work for everything. Anyway, enjoy….

I’m finding all kinds of stuff on my old VHS tapes. It seems that I recorded just about everything I could. Tonight I found 3 recaps of a classic NCSU game. State battled back from 20 points down as Rodney Monroe scored 30 points in the 2nd half….after only 2 in the first. Here I have 3 different recaps: WRAL, WTVD, and “The Les Robinson Show“. Funny thing is, I actually had the full game recorded before the news recaps, but it appears that an ex-girlfriend used the tape to record a movie awards show….so, I’m left with these news casts.

In a move everyone knew was coming, Bill Cowher called it quits today as the Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s been widely speculated that this move would come ever since Cowher bought a home in Raleigh, NC in May of last year. It is also speculated that Cowher’s retirement isn’t permanent…it may just be a one year hiatus. We’ll see. Cowher retires with a 140-90-1 record with the Steelers including a Super Bowl win last year. The guy is a legend here in NC as he has North Carolina State ties. Best of luck to Bill and his family.
Art Shell moved on in a different way as he was fired by Al Davis today. Honestly, I think this has to be a relief for Shell. The sides were supposed to come to an agreement tomorrow, but I bet Shell sat down and said “don’t worry about hurting my feelings….FIRE ME PLEASE”. There is no way he could have known what he was getting himself into when he signed up to coach this team.  No clue where the Raiders go from here, anyone that takes that job has to be crazy. I would expect most of the Raiders offensive staff to be gone with Shell. I don’t think John Shoop showed enough in 5 games as offensive coordinator to hang around. Good luck with that #1 pick.
1 commentJim Valvano On David Letterman
I found this clip on a VCR tape this morning while rummaging through some of my old stuff. It’s Jim Valvano appearing on David Letterman doing a pretty humorous interview. I’m assuming this was in 1987 as Valvano congratulates Letterman and says “great game” in regard to Indiana. (Indiana won the National Championship in ‘97) If anyone knows the actual date for sure, I’d love to know. Sorry about the quality, I had to transfer this from a 20 year old VHS tape, to my computer, to YouTube, so I did the best I could with it. Also, it ends a little early….go figure, I was a kid. Enjoy, this is classic Jim Valvano, the man loved to talk and laugh.

I’ve got several other tapes with mid 80’s stuff on them, I’ll be adding more later.
5 commentsPack Loses 2nd Straight To West Virginia

State fought hard again last night vs. West Virginia but was just too thin, falling 71-60. State had pulled within a basket late in the 2nd half when West Virginia switched to a 1-3-1 zone and pulled away as the Pack missed perimeter shots. Last night was a winnable game for State as West Virginia lost much of their offense to graduation. I really think the depth issues are making things very tough for State, who falls to 5-2 overall. Next up for State is a home game vs. Savannah State this Saturday. Hopefully they can get back on track.

State pulled a fast one by hiring Boston College Head Coach Tom O’Brien. O’Brien’s name was in the mix, but this move was pretty unexpected. Kudos to NC State Athletic Director, Lee Fowler for keeping this one under wraps. O’Brien has coached the last 10 seasons and Boston College and has led the program to national prominence.

No commentsJim Valvano Speech
Jim Valvano speaks to the crowd in Reynolds in 1993. This speech preluded his famous ESPY speech but is just as powerful and inspirational. Anyone that has ever dreamed or loved can gain something from what Valvano said that day.
I found this video on this guys channel. He has a lot of videos up with a local flavor to them.
No commentsTom Burleson And David Thompson- 1974
A four part series that has made it up on youtube. NC State stars, David Thompson and Tom Burleson were interviewed the day before facing UCLA in the NCAA Final Four.
Pretty cool videos, check em out before they get lifted. Youtube is removing all copyright material, my account has been suspended.

Cowher Says “NO” To NCSU
Well, that’s one down. I can’t say that I didn’t see this coming. I’m actually quite glad that he went ahead and took his name on the mix. Now maybe people will focus on candidates that are more likely
Cowher Has No Interst In NCSU Job
Also, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe say they haven’t been approached yet.
No commentsNCSU Coaching Search
A few other names are popping up. As far as I know, Bill Cowher has not turned down the job yet either, so that pretty much blows up Adam Gold’s blog.
Here are the names in the mix currently:
Paul Johnson (Navy)- My pick if we can’t have Cowher.
Bill Cowher (Pittsburgh Steelers) Not happening
Jimbo Fisher (LSU assistant) Possible, but if Alabama wants him, he’s off the board
Norm Chow (Tennessee Titans assistant) Love to have him, but highly unlikely
David Cutcliffe (Tennessee Vol’s assistant) Has shown interest, I’d say his chances are rising.
Steve Logan His name has been “brought up” I can tell you now, NC State fans would NOT be happy with this hire. Not happening.
