Quick Slants: Basketball, Reggie’s Bush, and Politics
Back for another edition of Quick Slants, this week we’ll start in the crazy ACC.
The ACC gets even crazier tonight as Virginia Tech upset #4 North Carolina in OT, 81-80. The win gives Virginia Tech a season sweep over the Heels and sets up a HUGE matchup as Carolina travels to #21 Boston College this Saturday. B.C. will be no worse than tied for first in the ACC. They currently have a one game lead on Carolina, but host struggling Duke tomorrow night. Back to back wins over Duke and UNC would give the Eagles a commanding 2 game lead in the league. All this without Sean Williams. Another mild upset tonight as Georgia Tech knocked off Florida State, 63-57.
Carlos Zambrano refers to himself as himself. “Whatever happens, I don’t want to know about a contract during the season. I want to sign with the Cubs before the season starts. If they don’t sign me, sorry, but I must go. That’s what Carlos Zambrano thinks.”
Not only is John Amaechi gay, he also feels that Jerry Sloan’s perceptions of him held him back in the NBA. He also sounds like a mix between Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe; “We want our pound of flesh. We as society. Give us our human sacrifice. I don’t care what you lose. I don’t care what you risk. You must fall on your sword for us to look at you in a different way”. I think Amaechi is giving society WAY too much credit if he thinks we put that much thought into a player coming forward and telling us he is gay.

Hope For Bloggers Everywhere: True Hoop is absorbed by ESPN This is MAJOR news in the blog-realm. True Hoop is a fantastic site, but it gives everyone the hope that the can do the same.
I can now post something that will interest my fiancee!! Reggie Bush has been spotted with Ciara! Of course, since they were spotted together, this automatically means they are dating. The Big Lead goes as far to say that Ciara is being called the next Beyonce. I call whatever on that, she’s somewhat talented, even less hot, (she’s cute, but built like an 18 year old boy) and is nowhere in the REALM of hotness that Beyonce inhabits.

Ha Ha, Duke sucks!
Tiki Barber joins NBC to be a ‘Today’ show correspondent. NBC is a fitting network for Tiki.
Finally, I’ve been following the world of politics a little more lately. I’m a bit put off by Hillary Clinton being a little foggy in explaining why she originally voted for the Iraq war. I get that people would not have voted for the war had they known what they know now. That is a reasonable answer. However, the thing with Hillary is that she seems to use public perception to determine if her vote was a good thing…or a bad thing. Just 1 day after Saddam was captured Hillary was very clear to point out how pleased she was and that she voted for the war. See, the war was a good thing on that day, so she wanted to be clear that she voted for it. Now, the war is a bad thing, and she wants to be clear that she was voting for the inspectors to return to Iraq.
Elsewhere, Barack Obama, used the word “wasted” when referring to the 3,000+ U.S. soldiers that had died in Iraq. He quickly apologized and said that he shouldn’t and didn’t mean to use the word wasted. That’s fine by me, we all get carried away at times. However, Obama is about as far left on the war as you can get. He wants to get out of Iraq and fast. If he were to pull troops out of Iraq before the mission was completed, would our soldiers lives have been wasted? I don’t think it will matter, Obama is too far left to get the Democratic nomination anyway. It’s truly a shame, because he is the only candidate that doesn’t change his stance based on polls.
Finally, John Edwards second crazy blogger quit today. These girls, and Edwards keep making out like their blogs were “ok” because the were their own personal blogs. Yeah, ok for me to write, but I’m not involved with someone running for president. Jeez!

Sarah Spain has a video describing her Super Bowl ticket experience. She scored 4 Super Bowl tickets in about 48 hours. Pretty amazing story. So much for their Super Bowl predictions.

Duke lost their 3rd in a row to Carolina. How long until the Blue Devils fall out of the top 25? They are now 6th in the ACC, yet ranked higher than 4 teams that are ahead of them. Could Boston College be the NCAA version of the Philadelphia Eagles, losing Sean Williams, but continuing to win?
Â
The Celtics have now lost 16 straight games. Why? Name 5 Celtics other than Paul Pierce. I can name 16 Celtic legends: Red Auerbach, Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, JoJo White, John Havlicek, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Sam Jones, K.C. Jones, Reggie Lewis, Dave Cowens,  Tom Heinsohn, Don Nelson, Bill Sharmon. Seriously disturbing that a team with this much tradition is THAT bad.
Â
What’s up with the Nuggets? They’ve got both their stars now, but after losing again tonight, they are 2-4 with AI and Anthony on the floor. Now Marcus Camby is hurt. (big surprise there huh?) In all seriousness, this team better get it together and start winning fast or this whole “answer” experiment is gonna leave them asking a lot of questions.
Â
Don’t look now, but the Heat have won 5 in a row. Yes, this coincides with the return of the Diesel, but don’t overlook the contributions of Jason Kapono. His minutes, points per game, and shooting percentage have all increased during each month of the season, and he is averaging almost 19 points per game in 4 February games, while burning it up from 3 point land. I’d say it’s about time for Pat Riley to return so this team can have someone to credit for this turn around. Kapono doesn’t do much other than score, but he will be a HUGE asset to the Heat come playoff time as another scoring option. Go ahead…double Shaq in the post.
Â
The Wizards are in big trouble without Antawn Jamison. Speaking of the Wizards have you seen Gilbert Arenas have a shooting battle with DeShawn Stevenson? Arenas shoots one handed from the college 3 point line…and hits 73 of 100, while Stevenson shoots normally from NBA range. Apparantly, the two bet $20,000 on the shootout. The best part of the video (besides the amazing shooting) is watching Agent Zero’s attempts at distracting Stevenson, especially towards the end. The video is long….but you will see it is well worth the watch.

Today was National College Signing Day. I know you’ll be surprised, but USC and Florida pulled in the best classes. The rich get richer.

Evidently, John Amaechi is gay. Much like the writer of this article, I’m just tired of hearing about gay people. I don’t care if you are gay. It’s not something I need to know. If I do know, I won’t hold it against you. I’m sure a gay person can dunk a basketball just as well as I can (not that I can, but you get the idea).

I’m starting a new feature called “quick slants”. Basically news stories of the day that I don’t have time to do entire posts on, but want to give quick opinions on. Feel free to add.
Here goes:
Raiders Hire Kiffin: Somebody had to take the job. I really think Oakland is a bit to much for a coach with ZERO head coaching experience to take on. Lucky for Kiffin, things can only get better.
Garnett Suspended One Game: Didn’t get this one. You should be punished for INTENT, not if the punch lands or not. I realize, Carmello “restarted” a fight that had been settled, but Garnett should have gotten at least half of Anthony’s suspension. He tried to do the same thing that Anthony succeeded in doing…punch someone in the face.
Suns On Another Streak : Beat the Wizards tonight, and beat em bad. Steve Nash is starting to make a case for a 3rd MVP. I still believe that come playoff time, the Suns will go down.
Raiders To Make A Run At Vick: Fitting time frame for this to pop up huh? New coach in Oakland and Vick with his secret compartments. The rumor has Vick and the Falcons 1st round pick (#10) going to Oakland for….get this: Randy Moss, Jerry Porter, and the number 1 pick. Yeah, this ain’t happening folks, but it sure is fun to think about.
Iverson & Anthony Join Forces: Denver won their 5th in a row tonight, as they played just their 2nd game with both Iverson and Anthony on the court. Can they compete in the West? I think they can but not just because of these two guys. Why? The emergence of Steve Blake and the return of Nene Hilario. Steve Blake is the PERFECT compliment to Iverson and Anthony as an intelligent, pass first point guard who can stick the occasional shot. Watching him play 2 nights ago vs. Memphis (yeah, I know, it was Memphis) Blake was looking very “Steve Nashish”…yes, I know that is a stretch. Nene Hilario just happens to be the perfect compliment to often injured Marcus Camby. If Nene Hilario can provide enough of a presence when Camby sits, Camby might just be fresh for the playoffs. A fresh Camby means a HUGE defensive presence in the middle for the Nuggets, which is number two only to guard play come the NBA playoffs.
